Río Celeste Waterfall Hike & Llanos de Cortés

The Río Celeste is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural phenomena — a river that flows in a vivid, unearthly shade of turquoise blue through the heart of Tenorio Volcano National Park. The color results from a chemical reaction at a specific convergence point where two streams merge, producing a mineral suspension that turns the water an electric blue. According to local legend, the color appeared when God washed his paintbrushes after painting the sky. The waterfall — where this turquoise water drops into a pool framed by primary rainforest — is one of the most photographed natural sites in the country.

A three-hour guided hike leads through primary cloud forest and tropical rainforest along the riverbed: past lagoons, through the point where the river transforms from clear to turquoise before your eyes, and up to the waterfall itself. The trail involves some elevation and uneven terrain but is accessible to most fitness levels. Swimming is not permitted at the Río Celeste waterfall or lagoons due to the mineral content of the water, but the photography and the experience of standing at that waterfall are the point.

On the way home, the tour stops at Llanos de Cortés — a wide, curtained waterfall set in lush vegetation with a deep swimming pool at its base. After the Río Celeste’s no-swim rule, this stop delivers. A traditional Costa Rican lunch is served before the drive back.

A/C transportation from all PCP areas is included. Departure times vary by area: Hacienda Pinilla 6:00 AM, Tamarindo and Langosta 6:30 AM, Flamingo, Potrero, and Reserva Conchal 7:00 AM. Passport number must be provided at booking for national park entry — entrance fees are non-refundable. All ages welcome.
